On March 27, 2025, the Coalition on Urban Girls (CUG) hosted The Art of Well-Being: A Vision Board Experience, a transformative afternoon dedicated to the voices, dreams, and healing of Black and Brown girls ages 16–19 in Chicago. Held at the Shine Bright® Community Center’s Mission Discovery Center, the event created a powerful space where creativity met purpose, and vision met empowerment.
A Safe Space to Be Seen and Heard
From the moment participants walked in, they were greeted with warmth, vibrant visuals, and intentional energy. The afternoon began with open discussions around what it means to truly be well, not just physically, but emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. The girls courageously shared their thoughts and learned from one another in a judgment-free zone curated for sisterhood and safety.
Wellness Through Expression
Using art as a tool for reflection, attendees designed personalized vision boards to map out their dreams and wellness goals. Surrounded by gold frames, lush leaves, and affirming words, the girls took time to center themselves and express what matters most—from personal aspirations to community change. Mentors were on hand to guide and support, creating one-on-one and group opportunities for connection and growth.
Why It Mattered
This was more than an art workshop—it was a launchpad for collective healing and action. Participants left with:
A tangible expression of their well-being goals
Deeper awareness of self-care and emotional health
Peer connections and mentorship support
The empowerment to be advocates for their own lives
The experience was a vibrant reminder that when Black and Brown girls are given the space to dream, reflect, and connect, they thrive.
Looking Ahead
As a pre-launch event for the Coalition on Urban Girls’ larger initiative, “The Art of Well-Being” set the tone for what's to come. With their voices leading the way, CUG is committed to building out long-term systems of support, advocacy, and joy for urban girls across Chicago.
